Hampi Heritage & Wilderness Resort – REVIEW

January 2, 2017 by sarita

Namastey from team India Ghoomo,

During our recent 4 days trip to this Hampi, we decided to spend the last 2 days at Hampi Heritage & Wilderness Resort earlier known as the Sloth Bear Resort. This video aims to give you an overview of the property, hospitality offered by the staff and our experience over there.

Located at the edge of the Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary , Hampi Heritage & Wilderness Resort is a Jungle Lodges & Resorts property situated in Hampi.

DAY 1

We checked out from Hotel Mayura at 9:00 am and headed towards The Hampi Haeritage and wilderness resort which was just 8 kms away – both situated at Kamlapura.
In no time we reached the resort and were amazed with the location. The property is spread across 32 acres of shrub land and blends pretty well with the surrounding shrub forest. It has a huge reception area, a dining hall and around 20 cottages spread across the property at a considerable distance from each other . The location of these cottages with huge boulder laden hills in the backdrop gives the property a mystical touch.

Hampi Heritage Wilderness Resort Jungle LodgesHampi Heritage & Wilderness Resort Jungle Lodges
We were allotted cottage number 11, which was a bit away from the reception and dining area and required around 5 minutes walking which we enjoyed. The cottage was located at a secluded place and was spacious and clean. It was equipped with an air conditioner, bed, an almirah, a wardrobe space, chairs and side tables. The room also has a huge glass panel offering the views of the surrounding shrub land with hills in the backdrop.

The bathroom is a basic and clean one and has hot water supply and basic toiletries. It also has a huge balcony overlooking the hills and one can spot a number of birds chirping around. A very peaceful and relaxed area where one can spend hours soaking in the nature around.

After keeping our luggage in the room we went to the dining area to have breakfast.

Post breakfast we took a walk around the property. Since the time the resort became operational management has planted around 4 thousand trees inside the property. This makes property grounds less warm compared to the other areas outside the resort.

It also has a bird bath area with a hidden viewing post offering great views of birds coming down in the evenings for a bath. We could’nt spot any since it was afternoon but a nice place to sit and listen to the sounds of the nature .

At 1:30 pm it was time for lunch. Lunch served was a buffet spread and the food served was a mix of north indian and south indian cousine. I have to say the food was deliciously awesome. Special thanks to Chef Manju Nayak and team.
They took care of all the requirements and not to mention they were humble, courteous and polite.

Visiting Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary

After lunch, we took some rest inside our cottage and at 3:30 pm it was time to visit the Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary, this visit was included in the package.
Located at a distance of 15 kms from Hampi city, the Daroji Sloth Beach Sanctuary is around 1 hrs drive from the Hampi heritage and wilderness resort. The drive through the scrub forest lined with hills on all the sides is unique and beautiful. Driver Venkatesh who double up as guide is a very knowledgeable person. He briefed us about the flora and fauna of the sanctuary and helped us spot a number of birds including Painted Sandgrouse , Red-wattled lapwing, Little Brown Dove or the Laughing Dove & Indian Robin.

There is a watch tower from which sloth bear sighting is possible. We were able to spot around 5-6 sloth bears over rocks which was at a 300 meters range from the watch tower. We will soon upload a separate video on Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary covering detailed review. So stay tuned for that. Watching the bears was a delightful experience.

After enjoying the unobstructed 360 degree view of the sanctuary and watching the sun setting down behind the hills, we made our way back to the resort.

It was dark by the time we reached. Tea and snacks were served by the bonfire which instantly washed away the tiredness. Soup and dinner followed soon. After dinner it was time to bid good-night.

DAY – 2

We woke up quite early the next morning to go for bird watching. Naturalist Mahesh took us to the Tungabhadra high level canal where a large number of birds can be found.

Bird watching

Mahesh helped us spot Rufous Tailed Lark, Grey Francolin, Purple Sunbird, Pond Heron, Red Headed Bunting , a number of peacocks, pea hens and a couple of Indian Eagle owls and more. We have thought of making a separate video on Bird watching in Hampi which will cover more details and a lot more information. So stay tuned for that as well.

Mahesh also took us to a lake where we spotted ducks and herons.

After enjoying around 2 hrs of bird watching experience we were greeted back to the resort with a glass of fresh lime juice which was extremely refreshing . Breakfast served was once again simple and delicious.

We quickly freshened up and at 10:00 am, it was time to explore Hampi. Since we had already explored quite a number of places in Hampi, the management modified the sight seeing locations to suite our preferences.

Visting Hampi Ruins

Friendly guy Venkatesh once again accompanied us and took us to places we wanted to cover. Our first stop was the Royal centre-It is where
the Vijayanagara king stayed with his family and private households and conducted governance, business and ceremonies.

At Royal Palace we saw the Queens bath, Lotus mahal, Maha Navami Dibba, Watch Towers, Royal Elephants Stable, Underground Chamber, Kings Audiance Hall, Hazara Ram Temple, Pushkarni or the stepped tank and a lot more. Will cover everything in detail in our upcoming Hampi Tourism videos.

Venkatesh served as a a very knowledgeable , enthusiastic, energetic, patient and a friendly guide. He truly made our Hampi sight-seeing experience a lot more fulfilling and memorable one. He is a true asset to This Jungle lodges and resorts property. Special Thanks to him.

At 1:00 pm we returned back to the resort and had lunch at 1:30 pm. We took a 2 hrs nap and woke up refreshed for the evening sight-seeing.
We went to see the Achutaraya temple, Varah temple and a couple of more nearby places.
We also took a coracle boat ride into the Tungabhadra river and discovered a couple of temples inside the caves on the either sides of the river. After enjoying 1 hr coracle boat ride session it was time to climb up the Hemkut Hill to watch the sunset. Watching sun setting behind the hiils was mesmerizing. We returned back to the resort, had snacks followed by dinner and turned off the lights for the night.

DAY – 3

We started our our 3rd day at Hampi Heritage and wilderness resort, by watching the sunrise from the Malyawant Raghunath Hill. You must have already watched this video. If not, I will mention the link to the video in the description box below. you can click the like to watch the Sunrise at Hampi video.

After watching the sunrise, we returned to our cottage, packed our bags and made our way back to our home in Bangalore.

VERDICT!

We seriously had no idea that Jlr has such a wonderful property in Hampi. This one is truly one of their best properties that needs to be promoted well.

The management and staff is very polite, caring and friendly. They make you feel at home.
The food quality and amazing hospitality has won our hearts.
It is a complete package of a picturesque location combined with archeology, wildlife and warm hospitality.

You will love every bit about this place.

The Old Magazine House – Jungle Lodges & Resorts – REVIEW

January 2, 2017 by sarita

Namastey from team India Ghoomo,

On our very first trip to Dandeli in December 2013, Kamal & I decided to stay at the Old Magazine house – which is a part of Jungle lodges and resorts property.

The resort is very popular among birdwatchers since one can spot over 200 spices of birds within the resort during winters. This video aims to give you an overview of the property and our experience.

We chose to drive our own car and left pretty early at 2:00 am and took the NH4 route. After covering a distance of nearly 475 Kms we reached the property at 8:30 am.

WATCH the VIDEO :

The Old Magazine House – Jungle Lodges & Resorts – REVIEW

The moment we got down from the car the only sound we could hear was melodious chirping of birds and we we could see birds fluttering their wings and flitting from one branch to another. Since it was a winter morning, it was mist all around.

The old magazine house is surrounded by thick forest and is located in an area which is not open to the general public and the property grounds allow the visitors to enjoy the charms of untouched surroundings.

We quickly checked-into our cottage which was simple and rustic with a spacious balcony overlooking the thick forest. They offer 2 types of accommodation – cottages & dormitory. Currently, since the cottages are under renovation, the property has only dormitory with 20 beds available for bookings.

After having unpacked and freshened we headed towards the dining area gol ghar for breakfast. The dining space was huge offering a 360 degree view of the surroundings and We could spot birds right from there.
Food served was a buffet spread with a variety of dishes to chose from and everything we had was tasty.

After breakfast we decided to walk around the property and spent some time watching birds, clicking pictures and making video footage’s.

There was nothing much to do in the afternoon so we went to see the supa dam which is very close to the property and simply walked around. The bridge offered a lovely view of hornbills flying around from one tree to another and resting over the branches.
At evening, after having a cup of warm tea, the management arranged a 30 min trek inside the property to the Sunset view point. The trek was not a difficult one but for those who are not habitual of trekking might get exhausted.
Watching the sun setting down slowly behind the hills is truely amazing and should not be missed. One can enjoy the panoramic view of the serene backwaters of the Supa reservoir and the lush wildlife greenery spread for miles at a stretch.

After spending around 30 minutes at the hill top, we made our way back towards the lodge. On reaching, we were served delicious snack and tea followed by dinner at 8:30 pm.

Day 2 –

After enjoying a bird watching session early the next morning, the management arranged a short coracle boat ride activity for us carried out at Kali Adventure Camp – It’s yet another Jungle lodges property in Dandeli not very far from the old magazine house.

The slow coracle boat ride into the River Kali was relaxing and thrilling at the same time. We spotted quite a variety of birds on the trees and on little bushes that surround the water and watched crocodiles basking in the sun.

After a 30 minutes coracle boat ride session we returned back to the lodge, had breakfast and made our way back to Bangalore.

After a 4 hrs drive we reached the K.Gudi Wilderness Camp at 10:00 am and were welcomed with a glass of fresh juice offered by The humble and courteous staff which instantly washed off the tiredness from the drive.

We soon checked into our tent which was just 50 meters away from the gol ghar. The camp has total 3 Log Huts and 8 Tented Cottages. The tent was rustic, spacious inside and well ventilated with an attached bath and a small porch overlooking the thick forest.

After having unpacked, we rushed towards the dining area for breakfast since we were literally craving for some food.
Post breakfast, we returned to our tent, freshened up and took a walk around the property.

The camp is situated in the vicinity of the tiger reserve and a variety of birds and wildlife can be effortlessly spotted running across the property. The only sound we could hear was rustling of the trees in the cool breeze and melodious chirping of the birds.

There is a small water body not very far from the tents where we spent some lazy afternoon moments watching birds chirping around while the warm winter sun keeping us cozy. It was very peaceful and relaxing and felt as if we have been staying here for long. That’s how enchanting and wonderful it is being inside a forest.

At 1:30 pm lunch was served at Gol ghar which is jungle lodges trademark dining space. Food served was a buffet spread with a variety of delicious food to choose from. We could spot small herds of deer walking around the gol ghar which was thrilling and heart-warming.

The wildlife jeep safari started at 4:30 pm and took us deep inside the Tiger reserve. We we accompanied by a driver, a naturalist and 4 fellow guests. The naturalist informed us about the flora and fauna and we came to know there were around 35 tigers and leopards along with over 200 elephants inside the forest along with deer, monkeys and wild dogs.

During the 3 hrs safari, we could only spot the commonly sighted animals like the spotted deer, monkeys, barking deer, gaur, sambar deer, and a couple of birds. We also spotted Brown fish owl – a magnificent huge bird resting over a branch.

We were on the verge of witnessing hunting of deer by a pack of wild dogs. The dogs chased the deer into the bushes and they just vanished so we could’t capture the hunt. That’s how unpredictable jungle is, You don’t know what you are going to come across next. This definitely was the most thrilling part of the safari.

At 7:00 pm we were back to the camp. Snacks and tea was served at the gold ghar.

After watching a wildlife movie played at the gol ghar we warmed ourselves around the campfire and listened to some thrilling jungle stories narrated by the naturalists.

The warmth of the bonfire, the jungle sounds and the rustling of the trees added to the thrill. Dinner was served at 8:30 pm following which we went to sleep.
DAY 2:

Early the next morning A wake-up call at 6 am arrived with tea , coffee and biscuits following which Naturalist Narayan took us for a morning nature walk and trekking inside the reserve forest. It was a misty morning and the forest was abuzz with chirping birds and squirrels that chased one another from tree to tree.

The trail leads us through the dense forest canopy and a half an hour’s walk led us to a small water body where we spotted a bison and a heard of deer.

The naturalist knew the forest terrain very well and we followed the trails that lead us all the way up to the peaks of a nearby Hill. We spent some time watching the sunrise and feeling the cool breeze on our face and then made our way back to the camp.

We encountered, spotted and barking deers on the way and Also heard the Tiger roar quite a few times- a thrilling experience indeed.

On our return back to the camp, breakfast was served at the gold ghar which was simple and delicious following which it was time to check out.

VERDICT!

Exclusive wooded setting, unique environment. beautiful flora and fauna, The mesmerizing call of the wild animals, and phenomenal safaris and trekking are some of the experience bound to transport you and your thoughts to a world of enchantment.
